If you’re on a trip and you suffer an oral trauma, chipping or breaking a tooth, it’s important to take care of the tooth and situation right away. You don’t want to worry about a chipped or broken tooth your whole vacation, do you? So, to help you treat the tooth, our dentist, Dr. Scott and Doug Petersen, has some helpful tips for you.

First, save the tooth pieces. When you collect them, rinse them off with water (be careful not to lose them down the drain). This will help you wash any blood and debris off the pieces. Then, put them in a safe place. You’ll need them for treatment.

Second, rinse your mouth. It’s best to rinse with warm water. This can clean your mouth from any particles that are foreign to your mouth. It can also give you a clear view of the tooth and gums so you can see the exact damage.

Third, schedule an appointment with a local dental office. Explain the situation when you talk to them and ask if you can have treatment as soon as possible. While you’re on the phone, take care of any insurance or paperwork questions that might keep you waiting in the waiting room when you arrive. Remember to take your tooth pieces with you to your appointment.
