One potential sleeping disorder that can cause serious problems to not only your oral health but your physical health, is sleep apnea. Sleep apnea has numerous causes that can arise due to irregular breathing patterns while you sleep. If left untreated it can lead to numerous health problems, including high blood pressure, heart failure, and stroke.
Several risk factors exist that can increase your risk of sleep apnea, including your weight and your family history. If you’re a male over the end of 40, you’re more likely to suffer from sleep apnea. Furthermore, those with large tonsils, a large tongue, a small jaw, a deviated septum, or nasal obstructions may also be at a heightened risk for sleep apnea. Sinus problems and allergies can also increase your risk.
Sleep apnea often arises in two distinct varieties. Obstructive sleep apnea. which is the most common form, typically arises due to blockages in your airway, which can be due to health factors and the way you sleep. Another type of sleep apnea is known as central sleep apnea, which arises due to blockages involving brain signals not being sent to your breathing muscles. If your brain fails to signal your breathing muscles to breathe or if the signals are not received, central sleep apnea will arise.
